Crate Training a Puppy: Step-by-Step Guide for Calm, Happy Crate Time

Crate training your puppy doesn’t have to be stressful — in fact, when done right, it can become your puppy’s safe and happy space. 🐶

Start by placing the crate in a common area like the lounge. Keep the doors open, and begin tossing treats inside to encourage curiosity. Whenever your puppy enters the crate — praise generously! Repeat this several times, always rewarding inside the crate, not outside.

As confidence builds, gently close the door while they’re eating. Say “OK” and open it as they finish. Keep your tone cheerful and talk to them often — your voice reassures and helps them settle. Gradually increase how long the door stays shut and start moving around the room as they relax inside.

💡 Bonus tips:

  • Feed meals in the crate with the door open at first.

  • Use snuffle mats, licki mats, or rolled towels to make crate time enriching.

  • Encourage naps and give long-lasting chews (secure them to the crate if needed).

If your puppy shows signs of stress — go slower. Crate training should always be a positive experience.
