uppy Proofing Your Home: Essential Safety Tips for New Dog Owners

Bringing a puppy home is exciting — but without the right setup, things can quickly go sideways! 🐶 From chewed shoes to toilet accidents, the key to success is control and management.

Start by limiting access: if you can’t close doors, use baby gates or puppy pens to block off certain areas. Treat anything on the floor (shoes, bags, clothing, remotes) as fair game — keep it all up high and out of reach. Electrical cords should be enclosed or fenced off.

Toilet training? Roll up rugs and floor mats, and avoid giving your puppy free access to your entire home too soon. Choose a safe, enclosed area for unsupervised time.

Safety first:

  • Block stairs, balconies, and open windows.

  • Secure any large water features or pools.

  • Remove sharp or toxic items and check gardens for dangerous plants.

  • Don’t forget supervised, calm introductions to other pets or kids — short sessions work best, followed by a nap.

Creating a safe, controlled environment from day one builds good habits and prevents stress — for both of you!
